Case Study — Bay Horse Pub, Moulsham Street, Chelmsford

Stoneleaf Danbury Handmade Plain Tiles fitted to the Bay Horse moulsham street

Product: Stoneleaf Danbury Handmade Plain Tiles
Client / Contractor: SJ Webb & co Ltd
Scope: Exterior renovation; roof stripped and re-laid as part of conversion to flats and reinstatement of pub frontage

The Bay Horse on Moulsham Street is a remarkable little survivor, a Grade II listed tavern set in one of Chelmsford’s oldest streets, where medieval and Tudor building lines still shape the townscape. The building’s historic character and the conservation-area setting on Moulsham Street meant any external works had to be sympathetic to traditional materials and vernacular detailing.

For the roof replacement, SJ Webb stripped the existing covering and re-laid the roof using the Stoneleaf Danbury Handmade Plain Tile. The Danbury tile was chosen because it closely matches the handmade profile, texture and blended mixes appropriate for a conservation setting, giving a traditional appearance while meeting modern performance expectations. The extensive use of Danbury tile in sensitive restorations approved by Chelmsford’s Conservation Officer confirms its suitability for historic roofs.

Because the Bay Horse sits inside a conservation area and is a listed building, the project team worked with the conservation office to gain formal approval for the new roof covering. That approval was granted for the Danbury plain tile, allowing the contractor to proceed with the sensitive re-roofing and enabling the wider scheme (reinstating the pub frontage and creating flats above) to move forward. Local press and planning notices covering the redevelopment of the Bay Horse site outline the intended reuse and residential conversion that accompany the façade and roof works.

The Bay Horse project is a good example of how carefully chosen traditional materials, combined with experienced contractors and early engagement with conservation officers, can allow historic buildings to adapt for contemporary use without losing the texture and identity that make streets like Moulsham Street special.

Pembury Handmade Barn Style Project

Stoneleaf Pembury handmade clay plain tiles were chosen to cover this stunning barn style new build near Dunmow, Essex. The design called for a natural, rustic appearance of historic English farm buildings – the roofing material needed to provide authentic colour variation and texture, rather than the uniformity often seen with concrete or synthetic tiles.

The variation in the 2 colour mix – 60% Medium Antique and 40% Red Blend, achieves the desired traditional barn look with colour depth and irregularities.

Pembury handmade clay tiles are available in four attractive colours – Red Blend, Burnt Red, Medium Antique and Dark Antique, with a full range of fittings to suit different roof designs. For peace of mind, they are fully tested to ensure they meet the requirements for flexural strength, water impermeability and durability according to BS EN 1304.

The roofing works were expertly carried out by Danny and James of Blyth Roofing, who added a decorative touch to a lower level roof by including diamond shaped Stoneleaf Del Mino Best Grade natural slates cut on site.

Billie Frairs Fitting Clay Roof Tiles on her new home

At Home With the Sheps

Billie Shepherd (formerly Faiers) and her husband Greg are known for their impeccable taste, and their journey to build their dream Essex mansion has been a highlight of Billie and Greg: The Family Diaries on ITVX.

We are thrilled to announce that our very own Pembury Handmade Clay Plain Tiles were chosen to top off this incredible project!

The Shepherd Manor is a masterclass in modern-classic design. The Pembury range is specifically designed to bridge that gap. By using traditional firing methods, these tiles offer the rustic charm of a period property while meeting the rigorous standards of a contemporary build. This ensures the roof doesn’t just look like a “new build” cover, but rather a structural feature that feels like it has been part of the Essex landscape for generations.

Billie didn’t just pick the tiles; she got involved in the process. As seen on her dedicated home Instagram account, @athomewiththesheps, Billie shared a behind-the-scenes look at the installation under the careful supervision of Les Clark Builders.

If you missed the transformation, you can still catch the full journey on ITVX. Watch as the house transforms from a construction site into the stunning family home it is today. Keep an eye out for our tiles in the wide shots of the property!
